Day 1: Mumbai (Arrival)
Welcome to the vibrant and multicultural city of Mumbai! Your adventure begins with a warm welcome at the airport, where one of our local guides will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in Colaba. If your arrival time permits and you’re feeling energized, you’ll have the chance to explore the area on foot, accompanied by your guide. Discover iconic landmarks like the Gateway of India, the fascinating Prince of Wales Museum, and take in the views along Marine Drive. Your journey will kick off with a welcome dinner at a cozy rooftop restaurant, where you’ll savor delicious traditional Indian dishes. During dinner, your local female guide will walk you through the exciting itinerary for the next days filled with adventure and learning. Get ready to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of this unique city, all while supporting local communities every step of the way.
Day 2: Mumbai
Together, we will travel to Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest informal settlements and a vibrant hub of small-scale industry in Mumbai. This tour offers an authentic and nuanced view of life in this bustling community, showcasing the resilience and creativity of its residents. You’ll also learn about the impactful NGO programs that directly benefit from your visit, empowering local women and families. After exploring Dharavi, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your leisure. You can choose to visit iconic landmarks such as the magnificent Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the serene Haji Ali Mosque, or take in panoramic views from Malabar Hill. Dive into the vibrant chaos of Mumbai’s diverse markets, or opt for one of our unique experiences: an evening food tour to savor the city’s culinary delights. This day is all about immersing yourself in the local culture while supporting the communities we visit.
Day 3:Mumbai / Hubbli / Badami
We’ll set off for the stunning region of Badami in north-central Karnataka. In the morning, we’ll fly to Hubli, followed by a scenic two-hour drive through rural Karnataka to reach Badami. (For those who prefer an alternative, there’s also an option to take an overnight train.) Once we check into our accommodation, we’ll begin our exploration of the magnificent Badami Caves, guided by a knowledgeable local woman who brings her unique perspective to the region’s rich history and artistry. This UNESCO World Heritage site boasts some of India’s most breathtaking Hindu cave temples, with intricately carved sandstone cliffs that tell stories from Indian mythology and history. Each of the four main caves is dedicated to deities from Hinduism and Jainism, with ancient reliefs and statues that have been preserved for over a millennium.
Day 4: Badami / Hampi
After breakfast, we’ll set off by car from Badami toward the enchanting town of Hampi, stopping to explore the awe-inspiring Aihole and Pattadakal temple complexes along the way. Both UNESCO World Heritage sites, these ancient temples reveal the depth and diversity of Karnataka’s architectural heritage, with centuries-old structures that represent a fascinating blend of styles and cultural influences. We’ll arrive in Hampi in the late afternoon, where you’ll have free time to unwind and soak in the relaxed pace of this historic town, preparing for the adventures ahead. Hampi’s mesmerizing landscapes and unique cultural charm await!
Day 5: Hampi
Today, we’ll immerse ourselves in the heart of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its breathtaking architecture and rich history. Led by a local woman, we’ll uncover the fascinating stories carved into this ancient city, where women held essential roles as leaders, warriors, and artisans. Far from being confined to traditional roles, women here served as bailiffs, accountants, and even astronomers, contributing significantly to the community’s governance and cultural achievements. In the afternoon, we’ll cross the river to Anegundi, a nearby village dedicated to sustainable and women-led crafts. Here, artisans create beautiful items from banana leaves as part of a community project that supports their families and keeps traditional skills alive. You’ll have the chance to learn about their craft, hear their stories, and even try some of the techniques yourself. To end our day, you may opt for a tranquil coracle boat ride along the river, soaking in the peaceful surroundings. We’ll conclude with a mesmerizing sunset over Hampi’s unique, boulder-strewn landscape—a perfect way to reflect on the day’s experiences.
Day 6: Hampi / Yellapur / Byndoor
Today, we’ll journey south from Hampi to the lush landscapes of Yellapur, known for its serene waterfalls, rolling hills, and ancient temples. Here, we’ll visit a Siddi community school, where we’ll learn about the inspiring efforts to preserve the heritage and culture of this Afro-Indian community. We’ll also have a chance to explore the village, connecting with locals and understanding their way of life. Continuing our drive, we’ll head to Heranjalu, a village where Tours by Her founder, Teresa, lived while working on educational projects. En route, we’ll stop at the impressive Murdeshwar Shiva Temple, home to the world’s third-largest Shiva idol, an awe-inspiring landmark along the coast. Upon arrival in Heranjalu, you’ll be welcomed by Teresa’s host family and get oriented with an introductory walk through the village, where you’ll meet community members and gain insight into their daily lives. Depending on the day’s activities, you may have the chance to participate in village routines and traditions.
Day 7: Byndoor
Today, we’ll immerse ourselves in the heart of local life with visits to a nearby school, vibrant markets, and a cashew processing factory, where you’ll gain insight into the local economy and the importance of cashews in this region. As you explore, you’ll meet community members and learn about their roles in these everyday industries. For those with a passion for food, we’ll visit a South Indian kitchen where you’ll have the chance to learn about traditional cooking techniques and perhaps try your hand at preparing a classic recipe. It’s a great opportunity to deepen your understanding of the flavors and culture of the region. In the evening, we’ll indulge in Gadbad, a local ice cream specialty, known for its unique combination of flavors and textures, offering a sweet end to the day. In the evening, we’ll experience a traditional Yakshagana performance (seasonal from November to May), a vibrant folk theater that blends storytelling with music and dance, showcasing Karnataka’s cultural and religious heritage. It’s a memorable way to close a day full of learning and local immersion.
Day 8: Byndoor / Goa
After a relaxing morning spent with the family and immersing yourself in the village life, we’ll enjoy a traditional lunch together before bidding farewell to our hosts. In the afternoon, we’ll board a train to Goa, traveling through the scenic landscapes of southern India. Upon arrival in Madgaon, we’ll transfer you to Palolem, known as "Paradise Beach," in South Goa, arriving in the early evening. Once in Palolem, you’ll be greeted by the pristine beauty of the beach, with its gentle waves and tranquil atmosphere. Take the evening to unwind, explore the beach, and enjoy the laid-back vibe of this coastal paradise. The next day is all yours to enjoy at your own pace—relax on the golden sands, take a refreshing dip in the Arabian Sea, or sip on fresh coconut water as you soak up the sun. It’s the perfect way to end this incredible journey, embracing the true essence of Goan beach life.
Day 9: Goa
Today is yours to choose how you’d like to spend your time. If you prefer a relaxing day, simply unwind on the beautiful beach of Palolem, enjoying its laid-back atmosphere and the soothing sounds of the ocean. Alternatively, if you’re in the mood for exploration, your guide can take you on a scenic drive to Old Goa in Panjim (4 to 5 hours round trip). With the help of a local guide, you’ll delve into the rich history of Goa, focusing on the Portuguese influence that shaped the region. Stroll through the charming Latin quarters, where you’ll be captivated by the colonial-era architecture, vibrant streets, and majestic churches. This tour offers a deeper understanding of Goa's unique cultural blend, combining the best of both its historical past and its modern-day vibrancy.
Day 10: Goa (Departure)
Today marks the end of our journey, but the adventure doesn't have to stop here. You have the option to spend the day relaxing in Palolem, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere, or you can explore one of Goa’s many other stunning beaches. Whether you choose to unwind on the sands, enjoy a leisurely swim, or simply reflect on the experiences of the past days, it's the perfect way to wrap up your trip. Should you wish to stay longer and extend your time in this paradise, there’s no better way to conclude your South India journey than with a final day of relaxation and peaceful moments by the sea.
